Hanover captures Capital District Regular Season Title Defeating Henrico 52-27

Hanover’s 52-27 victory over the Henrico Warriors Friday night at Hanover high school was much more than another sound victory for the undefeated Hawks. With the victory, Hanover sealed its first Capital District Championship in the schools seven year history.
In the last seven years Hanover has suffered through 1-9 seasons and built itself into a perennial power in the Central Region capturing regional championships and competing in the state tournaments.
But on Friday night the Hawks cleared a hurdle that had previously been out of their reach thanks to the successes of Division-6 Capital District programs Varina and Highland Springs.
Hanover used the recipe for success as they have through the entire season thus far, solid running and the dual threat of senior halfback Deane Cheatham and sophomore quarter back Sam Rodgers.
Cheatham would rush 26 times for 234 yards and Rodgers contributed 167 yards on the ground himself including a game changing 80-yard run with the Hawks down 7-3 early in the second quarter.
Treyvon Robinson led the Warriors, who made things difficult for the Hawks in the first quarter. Henrico struck for a 50-yard pass on their first drive to put the Hawks in a 6-0 hole and then held the Hawks offense to a field goal on their first scoring drive. Robinson rushed for 136 yards and three scores on the night and threw for 209 as well.
With the Rodgers touchdown early in the second quarter, Hanover began to pull away from the Warriors. The Hawks turned Henrico over twice with interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by Marzae Brooks.
And with that Hanover was on its way to the victory and the Capital District Crown. The Warriors weren’t able to keep up with the Hawk offense, which put up 28 points in the third quarter on another Rodgers touchdown run, the Brooks INT return as well as a Cheatham TD run and a touchdown reception by Blake Underdown.
The win and the march to the district title begane early in the season when Hanover marched into Highland Springs and defeated the Springers for the first time in school history. Hanover followed that victory by returning home to soundly defeat the Varina Blue Devils (another first for the program).
In fact, Hanover has seen a lot of school firsts this season, including going the deepest into a season ever undefeated, at 9-0.
“It’s been awesome this is what I came here for, my senior year, to win games and play football at the highest level,” said Cheatham.
Hanover’s victory solidifies the school’s place in the Division-5 playoffs where they will be joined by Clover Hill, Dinwiddie and either Atlee or Petersburg high schools.
