Hanover Rolls Over Deep Run in Home Opener
The Hanover Hawks opened their home schedule by scoring early and often in a 49-0 defeat of the Deep Run Wildcats Friday night at Hanover High School.
The Hawks, who improved to 3-0 on the young season and boast number three ranking in the Times Dispatch regional poll (the top ranking for any Division-5 school), scored on their first punt return and then first offensive play of the game.
Deane Cheatham followed a Deep Run three and out with a 52-yard punt return and, following a second three and out from the Wildcats, Sam Rogers connected with Kenny Morris for a 47-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0 before some had even taken their seats.
The touchdown pass was the first of what would be four on the night for Rogers. The sophomore quarterback was a perfect 11-11 for 212 yards.
Rogers would toss his second touchdown pass before the opening quarter ended when he connected with Blake Underdown on a 29-yard scoring strike. Underdown ended the game with four catches for 94 yards and added another reception touchdown later in the game.
Cheatham added eight rushes for 57 yards and a score on the ground to go along with the early punt return.
The lead was pushed to 28 before the half then 35 and 42 before the halfway mark of the third.
Kenny Brooks had a 27 yard touchdown reception and Andrew Knizner added a rushing touchdown to cap the scoring in fourth quarter relief of Rogers.
The Hanover defense proved stingy throughout the contest. Deep Run’s best threat came mid way through the second quarter. With the score already 21-0 two long runs by the wildcats put the ball on the Hawks 26-yard line.
However, a pivotal Mike Holland third down sack stifled the Deep Run drive and the Hawks would add a score on the ensuing drive before the half.
The Hawks will prepare to hit the road again now, heading into a critical Capital District match up with Springers this Friday night at Highland Springs High School. The Springers, ranked 5th in last weeks Times Dispatch poll, picked up a victory of Godwin this past week 13-3. The Hawks will attempt to wrestle control of the Capital District away from the Springers who have controlled the district, along with the Varian Blue Devils, for the past decade.
