Longwood's Emergency Alert System: Student's Questions and Concers

Longwood’s emergency alert system, and the text message system in particular, has raised issues and questions with students across campus. The list of students with common problems is long. Erin Brosnan, a junior, experienced one of the common problems with the system last Tuesday. Brosnan failed to get the text message alert concerning the drill even though one had been received on previous occasions. “ I understand it was just a drill, but it just got me to wondering if this would ever happen if there was a real occurrence.  I just like to know that I feel safe around campus and this alert system is supposed to do just that. ” said Brosnan. Not receiving the message is not the only problem experienced with the system. There are also delays. “The main issue I have with the alert system is that for some reason I always receive the text 20 minutes after it is initially sent out,” said freshman Emily Morone. When it’s not the text messaging portion of the system, the email portion of the...

A year at the helm of a newspaper…Not to be confused with a Public Relations Brochure.

The Following is a copy of a an editorial published in 'The Rotunda' It has officially been a year this week since I was part of the tandem selected to replace Emily Grove as editors-in-chief of The Rotunda. Now, a year later, the cycle has renewed. An election for the future editor-in-chief and managing editor of this paper were held last week, and I now find myself in the home stretch of my time here and at Longwood. But a year as editor-in-chief has opened my eyes to many things in this world and inside the little bubble we call a college campus. I have surely watched a simple campus publication blossom into a constant source of information and reporting in the past year. Many things happen on this campus, good and bad, empowering and embarrassing, uplifting and troubling. However, it’s all real, and...

Since My Content Is Yours Facebook I Think I Need to Find Some New Hobbies

I usually tend to consider those terms of service agreements on Web sites as nothing more than an inconvenient step on my way to signing up for something fun. Every service you sign up for these days seems to have their own individual agreement, but I always say that if there was really anything wrong with the agreement all those millions of other people out there wouldn't have signed up, right? I'm probably not going to change my thoughts much on that, but after this past week I might take another millisecond before clicking yes I (blindly) agree to the terms of this service agreement on the next pointless online service I sign up for. That's because this past week I've seen more news about terms of service agreements than I had ever thought could be drummed up about a seemingly meaningless nuance. Who knew this stuff actually meant something? Well it does. Just ask Facebook, who changed their agreement thinking every consumer would react much like I probably would hav...
