Hanover drubs JR Tucker, avenges last year's loss
Revenge is a dish best served cold, and on Friday night Hanover delivered a healthy portion of it to the JR Tucker Tigers.
Hanover avenged last year’s surprising defeat at the hands of the Tigers by posting 37 unanswered points in route to a 37-7 convincing victory Friday night at JR Tucker high school.
Since last year, when Hanover coughed up a lead to the Tigers in the second half and lost 34-24, this year's date was circled on the calendar as a chance for remption.
Tucker’s defense held tough early on in the contest, keeping Hanover off the scoreboard in the first quarter, however the Hawks began to impose there will in the second quarter thanks to running back Deane Cheatham and quarterback Sam Rogers.
The duo formed a two-headed monster in the run game that Tucker proved unable to stop. Cheatham had two touchdowns and both he and Rogers ran for close to 100 yards in the second quarter, including a 52-yard run by Rogers.
Hanover broke through on the scoreboard early in the second quarter with a 9-yard Cheatham run. That was followed by the 52-yard touchdown run from Rogers and a 3 play 72 yard quick strike drive at the end of the half to give Hanover a 21-0 lead at the break.
Coming out of the half the Tigers stalled on their first drive of the third quarter, and after giving the ball over to Hanover the Hawks would go on a 60-yard time-eating drive down to the Tucker 1-yard line.
After giving the ball over to the Tigers on downs with less than two minutes left in the third quarter and back up on their one-yard line Hanover’s defense turned Tucker’s first offensive play into a safety. Hanover's Monte Carr gained penetration into the backfield and disrupted a Tiger run for the score.
With the tally at 23-0 Hanover would add another touchdown on the drive ensuing from the safety kick and then an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown on the next Tucker possession sealed the route and the win for the Hawks early in the fourth.
Tucker would add a touchdown late in the fourth on a pass from Marcus Moore to Michael May to make the score 37-7. Mey had 114 yards receiving on the game, but the Tigers’ offense was otherwise stifled.
Rogers finished the game with 115 yards rushing and 69 yards passing with two touchdowns, while Cheatham had 142 on the ground and two touchdowns of his own.
Hanover returns to action this week for their home opener against Deep Run Wildcats at 7 p.m.
