Atlee pounds Benedictine 42-7, opens season 1-0
The Atlee Raiders kicked off the 2010 high school campaign for Hanover County schools with a decisive victory over the Benedictine Cadets 42-7 Friday night at Atlee high school.
Senior Trevor Elie, one of the 15 returning seniors for the Atlee Raiders led the charge with 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
The Raiders, who have been grooming young talent for the past two years come into this season with veterans at most of the leading skill positions including quarterback with senior Drew Ferguson, Josh Doggett at middle linebacker and Elie at running back.
The veteran presence showed in the early season tilt as Atlee’s defense took advantage of Cadet mistakes on offense and cashed them in all night.
Atlee forced the first Benedictine mistake on the Cadets’ second drive of the game as a running back fumble was picked up by junior Thomas Pulisic and returned 6 yards for the opening score of the game.
Benedictine would strike back on their next drive. After a Desean Wells 32-yard return for the Cadets’, David Geary would broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run on the second play of the drive to even the score at seven.
The teams traded stalled drives until midway through the second quarter when Atlee began to impose its will with Elie on the ground. Midway through the second quarter the senior broke free for a 46-yard run followed by a 5-yard touchdown scamper to up the Raider’s lead to 14-7.
Benedictine put together its most sustained drive of the game in response to the touchdown, tacking together an eight play drive totaling just less than five minutes down to the Atlee three yard line.
Atlee senior R.J. Price halted the drive though with an interception and a 102-yard return for a touchdown to give the Raiders a 21-7 lead.
The Price return put Atlee in firm control of the contest. From there, the Raiders gave the Cadets a steady diet of smothering defense and a balanced offense headed by Elie and quarterback Drew Ferguson, who used both his legs and arms to make plays against the Benedictine defense.
Elie would add another touchdown run in the third quarter and senior Cody Farrar sealed the win with Atlee’s second interception return for a touchdown in the contest seconds later.
Price made plays in all three phases of the game for the Raiders on the evening, piling up receptions from Ferguson on offense, the interception and return on defense as well as a 60-yard kickoff return late in the first quarter to lead the special teams.
Atlee’s next test comes on Friday night, when the Raiders will travel to Deep Run to face off with the Wildcats, who enter the season at the top of the class in the Colonial District behind the Hermitage Panthers.
